By Artists for artist, and for those travelers who appreciate and support local talent

Monte Azul Center for the Arts is a sanctuary where talented individuals can immerse themselves in their practice and collaborate with professionals across disciplines.

As a private self-funded project, Monte Azul is also supported in part by generous Patrons (donations are tax-deductible via Fractured Atlas), we foster creative exploration in visual, sound, literary, and other art forms. Artists and professionals may apply for self-funded residencies, while Fellowships—awarded by invitation—recognize outstanding achievements. Every artist accepted at MACA qualifies for consideration for partial or full funding.

We recognize the challenges artists face, especially in developing economies like Costa Rica, where many lack resources to reach their audiences. That’s why we’re committed to elevating exceptional talent.

San José, Costa Rica’s vibrant capital, is an underrated hub of creativity. From emerging artists to award-winning cultural offerings (like GAM Cultural), the city thrives with artistic energy — and collectors and travelers are taking notice.

At Monte Azul, we harness the Artist Super Power: creative problem-solving. This skill drives not only art but also innovation in fields like science and business. Applying this mindset, we developed the Patron Suites Program, a sustainable funding model that supports Costa Rican artists, creatives, and intellectuals through Fellowship Awards.

How It Works

Cascadas del Chirripó — a cornerstone of our financial sustainability — combines world-class architecture by award-winning artist and architect Andrés Cañas, with the lush beauty of Costa Rica’s rainforest. These flexible spaces serve as both studios and luxury suites, offering guests an immersive art-nature experience.

Appointed with original fine art, the suites blend nature, creativity, and elegance. The Monte Azul Gallery is a spacious, light-filled atrium functioning also as lobby, lounge, and dining space, enriching the guest experience. By staying here, travelers become art patrons — proceeds directly fund residencies, and those booking six nights or longer will have a residency named in their honor.

A win for artists, travelers, and collectors alike — this is how we reimagine a better world. Join us. Share the vision.
